The Obertor
is one of the most beautiful and oldest houses in the
city. At the highest spot of the city, it offers
hospitality since many generations.
Probably the oldest town-gate;
located at the upper end of the borough at the end of
the market-street and dating back to Guelph and Staufian
times. Today´s gate-tower was built in the 15th century
and made higher and equipped with an echelon-gable in
the 16th century. Until the 19th century there was a
bridge at the east side and a front-gate across the
city-moat. Above the passage you can see castbays for
deference. Walls on the west side are very thin due to a
lack of stone in Upper Suabia. The west side of the
tower was originally painted. The tower has had a clock
since 1618. Till the beginning of the 20th century the
hangdog-bell in the gable was rung during executions.
Height: 42 metres.
